Lore & Background

Mikami's journey began with a childhood in Yamaguchi Prefecture, where he played outdoors instead of video games. His father, who dropped out of high school to support the family, beat him daily, but Mikami found solace in horror films like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and karate. After failing entrance exams twice, he graduated from Doshisha University with a major in merchandise studies. He entered Capcom in 1990 by accident after attending a job fair buffet for free. Initially rejected, his application was approved a week later. His first project was the Game Boy title Capcom Quiz: Hatena? no Daibōken, followed by Disney-licensed games like Aladdin, which sold over 1.75 million units. In 1993, he began developing Resident Evil as a remake of Sweet Home, originally intended to fix the flaws of Lucio Fulci's Zombi 2. Released in 1996, it coined the term 'survival horror' and became a PlayStation staple.

In Their Own Story

In 1993, Mikami reluctantly took on the Resident Evil project because he hated being scared but understood fear. The game combined 3D polygonal characters with pre-rendered backgrounds, heavily influenced by George A. Romero's Dead films. Its success led to a film franchise where Mikami served as creative consultant for the first movie before dropping out due to creative differences. By 1997, he became general manager of Capcom Production Studio 4, overseeing Resident Evil 2, which sold over five million copies and used urban settings to create 'the ordinary made strange.' He also directed Dino Crisis in 1999. In 2001, Mikami made a controversial decision to sign an exclusivity deal with Nintendo for the main Resident Evil series on GameCube. This led to the 2002 release of the Resident Evil remake and Resident Evil Zero. The remake sold 490,000 copies in the US alone within its first year.

Reader's Guide

Mikami's career evolved from hands-on design to executive production and studio leadership. In 2005, he directed Resident Evil 4, a survival horror third-person shooter that redefined the genre. His final Capcom game was God Hand in 2006, a beat 'em up action title. That same year, he founded PlatinumGames, directing Vanquish in 2010 before leaving to start Tango Gameworks. At Tango, he directed The Evil Within in 2014. In 2022, he founded Unbound Co., Ltd. and subsequently left Tango Gamesworks in 2023. Throughout his career, he served as producer or executive producer on numerous titles. His contributions were recognized in 2009 when IGN named him one of the top 100 game creators of all time.
